Marion was born in March 1925 in Columbia, South Carolina, into the esteemed lineage of the late William MacDowell and Rainsford Fairbanks Dubose MacDowell, as their fourth progeny. During Marion’s birth, his father was 32 years old, while his mother was 30.

Marion’s educational journey encompassed Gaffney, where he graduated from Gaffney High School, and later he pursued higher learning at Sewanee: The University of the South. Furthermore, he valiantly served as a veteran in World War II.

Marion St. Pierre MacDowell achieved eminence as a prominent entrepreneur and a devoted family patriarch. Among his notable kin is the renowned actress and model, Andie MacDowell, who stands as his illustrious daughter. Additionally, his family circle includes a surviving second wife and a stepdaughter.

Marion’s Matrimonial and Familial Bonds

Before 1958, Marion exchanged vows with Pauline Johnston Oswald. Their lives traversed various towns, including Limestone, South Carolina, Cherokee, and Conover in the United States. Blessed with a daughter, Rosalie Anderson “Andie” MacDowell, in 1958, she blossomed into a captivating American actress and model.

Marion’s journey also led him to wed Mary Frances Stone MacDowell, with whom he bore sons, daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

The Life of Andie, Marion’s Daughter

The illustrious American actress and model, Andie, earned acclaim with three Golden Globe award nominations. Born to Marion and Paula, a music teacher, Andie’s lineage traces back to Scottish heritage. Her early years were spent in Arden, North Carolina, where the family owned an antebellum-era summer retreat, now known as the Blake House Inn, a charming bed and breakfast.

Andie embarked on her college education at Winthrop before relocating to Columbia, South Carolina, where she managed two jobs, one at a clothing boutique and another at a restaurant/bar. Serendipity granted her the opportunity to serve Senator Strom Thurmond during her tenure at the restaurant.

Her modeling odyssey began in the 1980s, paving the way for numerous accolades in the industry. In 2004, Winthrop College honored her with a Media Honor in the Arts. Andie’s first marriage, from 1986 to 1999, united her with fellow model Paul Qualley, whom she met during a Gap ad photoshoot. The couple was blessed with a son named Justin and two daughters, Rainey and Sarah Margaret. Subsequently, she entered a marital bond with businessman Rhett Hartzog from 2001 to 2004.

Marion’s Demise

On the 23rd of May 2014, at the venerable age of 89, Marion St. Pierre MacDowell passed away at Levian Hospital House in Huntersville, Mecklenburg, North Carolina. He found his final resting place among beloved family and friends in Newton, Catawba, North Carolina.

In addition to the passing of Marion’s parents, he was preceded in death by his esteemed sisters, Bayard Dedman, and Margaret McElveen, as well as his cherished brothers, Dubose MacDowell and Vinson MacDowell.
